What is occupational therapy?

The World Federation of Occupational Therapists, 2004, defines Occupational Therapy as an allied health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in theactivities of everyday life.

In simple terms, occupations are the activities that occupy our time. A child may have an occupational role as a daughter or son, brother or sister, student, player, self-maintainer (feeding, dressing, toileting and hygiene activities). Occupational Therapists working with children assist them to become more independent in these areas.

Occupational therapy services at Sensational Kids would benefit children with difficulties in the following areas:  

*Attention and concentration difficulties including ADHD/ ADD.

* Disorders of relating such as Autism spectrum disorders.

*Functional difficulties (e.g. feeding, toileting, dressing, shoe tying,bike riding)

*Fine Motor Difficulties including limitations in motor planning, grasp and handwriting.

* Gross Motor Difficulties including limitations in motor planning, coordination and sports related activities.

* Sensory processing/ sensory integration challenges including limitations in registering sensation, interpreting sensation,organising sensation and being over-responsive or under-responsive tosensation. The sensations that occupational therapists look at include touch, sound, sight, smell, taste and also sensations that relate to body awareness and movement.

* Visual processing/ visual perceptual challenges

* learning disabilities

* Regulatory disorders including children with difficulties in sensory, behavioural and emotional regulation.

* Issues related to behaviours seen as negative or inappropriate.

*Learning disabilities

* Non-verbal learning disabilities
